Nico Rosberg clinches maiden F1 title
Felipe Massa signed off from Formula One in impressive fashion as he took ninth for Williams in his final race before retirement.
Jenson Button’s final grand prix came to an early end when his McLaren’s front suspension broke as he bounced over a kerb on lap 12. “You collect a lot of points throughout the season and there are fortunate and unfortunate situations with your vehicle and other situations in the past”.
Fernando Alonso: “The race was good; fun, but hard as well”.
“That was definitely not the most enjoyable race I’ve had”.
“There’s only two drivers competing for the world championship, it was totally obvious that we was going to do that”.
“So, we can not ignore that fact that it’s been an incredibly successful year”. Nico defended well, turn 11 was the spot where maybe I could have had a chance but that way it wasn’t possible. He always believed in his possibilities and he managed his advantage perfectly.
The German driver is now a champion in his own right after clinching his first title on Sunday to match his father’s achievement from 1982.
Jenson Button: “A suspension component failed on the auto – which very rarely happens to us. I’m just really glad it’s over!” I will thank everyone else afterwards.
“For me, I am in a position where I had a lot of points lost during the season so for me I am out there fighting and generally never try to do anything to harm the team or the brand”.
Behind them Raikkonen was sixth, Nico Hülkenberg and Sergio Pérez took seventh and eighth to give Force India an impressive fourth place in the Constructors’ championship. “It’s a great feeling to win the championship”. On behalf of us all, JB, I salute you.
From tossing hats to taking each other out at this year’s Spanish Grand Prix – the intra-team rivalry at Mercedes has proved one of the most fascinating elements of F1 in an era in which the Brackley-based outfit have been peerless. He’s an awesome driver and one of the best in history, so it’s special to beat him because the level is so high and that makes it so much more satisfying for me.
“Lewis is an unbelievable competitor, one of the best of all time, [in the] longest season ever I beat him in unbelievably tough conditions”.
He was back on his tail later on, but Vettel was between them.
“And, last but very far from least, I want to pay tribute to our fans, the best in the world”.
“You don’t win the championship by luck so I think Nico won the championship today and he is a deserved champion”, he said. Its 34 years since his father Keke won the F1 championship. “Good job man”, Hamilton said, and they shook hands more enthusiastically this time.
“I’m very proud, of course, to have done the same feat as my dad achieved”, Nico added.
“He didn’t do anything dirty, he didn’t do anything against the rules and it would be unfair to criticise Lewis for the way that he drove”.
