Nico Rosberg finally world F1 champion status
The 31-year-old Rosberg concluded the longest season in the sport’s history with a nail-biting second place under intense pressure after leader and ultimate race victor Hamilton had slowed the field to create a hard finish.
“Right now, I’m losing the world championship so I’m not bothered if I’m going to lose the race”, replied Hamilton, who crossed the line 0.4 seconds ahead of Rosberg with Ferrari’s Sebastian Vettel third and a further 0.4 behind.
Mercedes’ celebrations over Nico Rosberg’s first world title have been overshadowed by “anarchy” between the world champion and Lewis Hamilton.
Mercedes is yet to decide how to react to Hamilton’s tactics after the defending champion disobeyed a series of radio calls from the pit wall telling him to up his pace.
“The feelings I had when I realised I had passed him, I have never had that in a racecar before”.
“I think there’s only one Wimbledon final or one grand slam final”.
“I don’t think I did anything risky, I don’t feel I did anything unfair”, he told reports.
And let it be noted, that there were no team orders preventing Rosberg from attempting to pass Hamilton. Nico Rosberg admitted that beating his long-term rival Lewis Hamilton to the world championship made his maiden Formula One title triumph all the more satisfying.
Mercedes had won the manufacturer’s championship: Under other circumstances the team might have been concerned about the constructor’s title.
Son of 1982 title-winner Keke, the 31-year-old has had to cope with being in the shadow of his famous father all career.
“There’s no time pressure”, he said.
Horner said: “With where they were at, it was just down to those two guys”. Horner, who had predicted the tactic going into the race weekend and defended Hamilton immediately afterwards, can not understand why Mercedes’ management was surprised at how the final laps unfolded. “It may have been intense for you but not intense for me. It’s a shame that they wouldn’t but it’s quite clear their thought process and yeah I mean I don’t really have much to say”, Hamilton said, as qouted by F1’s official website. “I don’t think what I did was unsafe, so I don’t think I did anything unfair”. He’s just an unbelievable driver, one of the best in history, so it’s unbelievably special to beat him, because the level is so high.
Mercedes’ Formula One driver Lewis Hamilton celebrates on the podium after winning the Abu Dhabi Grand Prix at the Yas Marina Circuit November 27, 2016.
“Every Saturday night I get a message from my dad, normally it’s ‘pedal to the metal!’ Everybody has their part of this”.
