Nicolino, Dietrich lead Marlins past Brewers 6-2
Suzuki had his first four-hit game in over two years, and Cole Gillespie drove in a season-high three runs to lead the Miami Marlins to a 9-6 victory over the Milwaukee Brewers on Tuesday night.
The Brewers (51-69) were coming off a three-game sweep of the Philadelphia Phillies, but the Marlins took the lead in the top of the third on a two-run single by Dee Gordon-their third hit of the inning-and never looked back. Florida SS Adeiny Hechavarria came into the game with a 10-game hitting streak. The Marlins salvaged the finale of their three-game set in St. Louis as Derek Dietrich erased a deficit with a three-run triple in the fifth inning en route to a 6-4 triumph.
Gordon doubled to lead off the fifth and eventually scored on a sacrifice fly to center by Martin Prado, stretching the Marlins’ lead to 5-1.
“I’m not an overpowering guy”, Nicolino said. “I haven’t been getting away with anything this year, so I didn’t expect to get away with much”.
“Too many fastballs that he got in the middle of the plate and got hit around there”, Jennings said.
Brewers right fielder Ryan Braun got one of those runs back, chopping a single into short left to score pinch-hitter Jason Rogers.
Former Brewers third baseman Casey McGehee capped the scoring with a pinch-hit RBI single in the eighth off Kyle Lohse. “I think it was close enough”. “There was no excuse for it, I just missed my spots and that’s about it. That’s all it was”. He retired the first two batters of the seventh inning before allowing a double and was replaced after throwing 95 pitches.
Dietrich hit his seventh home run, a two-run shot to center field, to make it 4-1 in the fourth inning.
The bulk of Miami’s offense came at the expense of Brewers right-hander Matt Garza (6-13), who hadn’t allowed more than three earned runs in his last five starts but was tagged for five runs and eight hits in five innings and lost for the sixth time in his last 10 starts.
Brewers: Wily Peralta (3-7) is 2-2 with a 4.24 ERA in four starts since being activated from the DL.
Marlins: Miami will start left-hander Adam Conley in Game 2 of the series.
Cravy will be making his fifth start for Milwaukee and will face the Marlins for the first time. Nicolino escaped with a no-decision against Boston on Tuesday after yielding four runs and nine hits over 5 2/3 frames.
