Nigel Sears collapses at Australian Open
The 58-year-old is coaching former women’s world No. 1 Ana Ivanovic and was watching her match against Madison Keys at the time.
But after a 50-minute break, the players re-emerged and the match was resumed, with Keys trailing 6-4 1-0.
The players remained on court for most of the delay but were headed for the locker room when they were advised to return as the fan was taken from the area on a stretcher.
Kim is due to give birth to the couple’s first child in the coming weeks, and could not travel to Australia to support her husband.
It is the second time this week Ivanovic’s match has been delayed by an incident in the crowd.
Watch as Andy Murray shows his supreme athleticism to reach a drop shot, and hit a victor, against Joao Sousa. “It was good to get through that one”.
The 2008 Open runner-up held a 3-1 lead in the third set but Keys immediately broke back in a 12-point game.
Her loss left No. 7 Angelique Kerber as the highest-ranked player in the bottom half of the women’s draw.
Ivanovic was alerted to movement in the stands, and looked up to her box where she saw medical staff gathering.
“It changed my life…” He appeared to be unaware of what was transpiring at Rod Laver Arena. Witnesses said he was met by his mother Judy upon leaving the court.
The match pitted the winners of the two Australian Open warmup tournaments – Raonic beat Roger Federer for the Brisbane International title and Troicki defeated Grigor Dimitrov in Sydney.
“Stuff like this doesn’t happen much back home”, he told reporters.
“I just tried to keep fighting”.
It didn’t help Muguruza, though, with her loss to Strycova extending a disappointing follow-up in majors since a breakthrough run to last year’s Wimbledon final.
The score, however, flattered the four-time finalist in Melbourne, and it was little surprise that Sousa, composing himself again, stole the first break in the second when a Murray backhand flew long.
