Nigeria’s President Buhari condemns Coup d
The interim president of Burkina Faso has reportedly been released from detention by coup leaders.
While welcoming news of the release of Kafando, Buhari also demanded the immediate release of Zida and other detained ministers.
Burkina Faso was preparing to hold its first democratic election in decades before the coup, led by allies of the former president, threw the nascent democracy into turmoil.
Sall, chairman of the regional ECOWAS body, was to meet Saturday morning with members of the political party of Burkina Faso’s ex-President Blaise Compaore, the longtime ruler whose ouster in an uprising previous year gave way to a political transition to guide the country to elections next month.
The National Democratic Council has said it agrees with the “principle of dialogue”. Presidential guard also said it was unhappy with the ban on candidates who were close to Compaore in the October election. Compaore is now in exile and was accused of committing widespread abuses, and trying to change the constitution to extend his term in office.
“We have called for our nationals living in Burkina Faso to pay extra attention to personal safety and we will continue to closely watch developments in the country”, Ministry of Foreign Affairs spokeswoman Eleanor Wang (王珮玲) said.
The coup has been condemned by the United States, former colonial power France and the United Nations.

The head of Burkina Faso’s transitional parliament called on the rest of the armed forces to step in and halt a coup by “a small group” of military officers.
Michel Kafando and the prime minister, Isaac Zida, were detained on Wednesday in a coup that dissolved the transitional government the next day. The arrest of the interim president sparked protests in Revolution Square.
At least three people were killed and more than 60 injured, according to hospital sources, when members of the presidential guard fired warning shots to disperse crowds and used batons to beat back stone-throwing demonstrators.
A curfew is in place across the country from 7pm (8pm BST) until 6am tomorrow and land and air borders have been closed.
