Nigerian herdsmen kill 20 in ‘revenge’ attack in Adamawa
At least 20 people, including a police chief, were killed in early morning attacks on four villages in northern Nigeria, police say.
It was gathered that more than 200 gunmen invaded Demsare, Wunamokoh, Dikajam and Taboungo and some parts of Fawore, where scores of the residents were gunned down.
Reports from the area revealed that the attacks may have been in revenge over a feud between the local farmers and herdsmen.
Okereofor, who was transferred to the community from Okigwe in Imo State barely two months ago, was said to have been ambushed alongside other officers and men as they moved into the communities to stop the invaders.
The corpse of the slain police officer and those of the remaining civilians are now deposited at the morgue of the Federal Medical Centre, Yola.
He added that reports indicated that the attackers looted the villagers’ foodstuff and livestock before setting their homes ablaze.
The police maintain that the situation is “under control”, and that those responsible will be brought to justice.
Commenting on the attack, the Acting Brigade Commander of the 23 Armored Bridgade, Yola, Aba Poopola, confirmed that the Fulani herdsmen had problems with the affected areas.
Iweha stated, “The incident happened in Mimbia, which is a border village between Plateau and Kaduna states”.
Meanwhile, the state government has condemned the attack and called for calm.
A police officer, CSP Okozie Okereofor, and 29 others were also reported to have been killed in the at tacks. “It is still hard to establish the casualties as people are now running to safe places”.
