Nike commercial features Team USA’s first transgender athlete
To compete at a national level in any sport is a feat of super-human determination, focus and sacrifice.
Not only are there more out players than ever before, but Team USA also marked a major milestone when Chris Mosier became the first transgender athlete to make the squad!
“I had people telling me that (competing against men) is not possible”. His event – the duathlon – isn’t an Olympic sport. Mosier reached out to the International Olympic Committee (IOC) and the International Triathlon Union upon qualifying, challenging the rule requiring “full lower” sex reassignment surgery.
“We are proud to celebrate the fact that Chris has been the first to break through a number of barriers, including being one of the first to help change worldwide guidelines for transgender people in competition, and believe his story will inspire others no matter what their own barriers are”.
Mosier answered every question with “I didn’t”. “But I asked myself, ‘Why does it matter?’ Well, it matters because there was no one else out there saying it”.
“Yes”, he says, “But I didn’t”. Beyond beating his own personal bests, records and times, Mosier constantly faces new challenges. In June, he became the first transgender man to compete for the United States on the world stage.
His commercial aired during the Olympic Games on Monday night as part of Nike’s “Unlimited Courage” campaign.
The video’s narrator then interviews Mosier.
