Nike’s Self-Lacing Sneakers From ‘Back To The Future II’ Are Real
In a commercial for Toyota, Michael J. Fox and Christopher Lloyd, who played the much-loved McFly and Dr Emmett “Doc” Brown, reunite on screen to discuss which predictions “Back to the Future Part II” got right.
Pepsi unveiled a limited run of “Pepsi Perfect”, the soda McFly drinks in the film, while Nike, whose power-laced shoes the character wore, tweeted Fox on Tuesday saying “See you tomorrow”, leaving fans speculating over the message.
Unless you’ve been living under a rock, you know that today is the day that Marty McFly travelled to in Back to the Future.
Just in time for Back To The Future Day, Nike’s self-lacing shoes are officially here.
“Almost 30 years ago, Nike was asked to collaborate on a movie that would feature scenes set in the futuristic world of 2015”, the brand said in a statement. That might sound like an odd fit, but all net proceeds will be going to the Michael J. Fox Foundation for Parkinson’s Research.
“We started creating something for fiction and we turned it into fact, inventing a new technology that will benefit all athletes”, president and chief executive Mark Parker said. Now, they’re a reality.Nike has finally manufactured a real pair of self-lacing shoes.
In a handwritten letter, legendary Nike shoe designer Tinker Hatfield teased the actor.
And in a fitting move, the very first pair of Nike Air Mags have been delivered to a delighted Mr Fox. Nike says it’ll reveal more in 2016.
Nike said this January that it hoped to release a version of McFly’s self-lacing sneaker by the end of 2015. The shoes were auctioned on eBay, raising over $4.7 million (£3.1 million) for Fox’s foundation.
