Nike to launch self-lacing Back to the Future sneakers
Marty (Michael J. Fox) wondered, reasonably.
The trainers won’t be available to the public until next Spring, so you’ll just have to keep tying your own laces until then.
Fox’s Marty and Lloyd’s Doc appeared from their DeLorean when Jimmy Kimmel was talking about “Back to the Future” Day.
Thirty years ago, the second installment in the “Back to the Future” trilogy imagined what October 21, 2015 might look like.
Kimmel showed the pair the smartphone, explaining “we mainly use them to send little smiley faces to each another”, and took the opportunity for a selfie with the bemused duo.
“As the first, most celebrated wearer of the Nike Air Mag, we wanted you to be the first to receive a living pair”, it read.
Nike previously announced shoes with lights based on the iconic brogues, and fans worldwide were disappointed that the exact replicas could not lace themselves.
“We hope that the combined effort will raise even more than the $9.4 million collected in 2011 and contribute in a few way to eliminating Parkinson’s disease in our lifetime”, said Nike’s Tinker Hatfield, who originally designed the shoes for the 1989 film.
In a Facebook video showing Fox trying on the shoes, the Back to the Future star expresses his admiration, saying: “That’s cool… that’s insane… that’s really great”.
This isn’t the first time Nike Mags have been on the market.
Though it seems like a novelty, Nike CEO Mark Parker claims to want to bring the power-lacing technology to other products “that will benefit all athletes”.
Nike released 1,500 pairs of the footwear without the self-lacing technology in 2011.
