Nikki Haley Tells Trump ‘You Shouldn’t Take These Things Personally’
It was reported that Haley encouraged members of her own party to avoid any temptations they may feel about following the “siren call of the angriest voices”.
Tonight, Trump fully embraced the anger and Haley.
He claimed Haley is weak on illegal immigration, but he did not offer details. She recalled Americans’ common heritage as immigrants – and the risks of vilifying those who would follow in their footsteps.
If refusing to make a distinction between legal and illegal immigration is now a litmus test for being a “principled conservative”, the term is poisoned. “And so therefore we have a disagreement”, Trump told the MSNBC news.
“The vision she outlined for our country was inclusive and optimistic, and perhaps most important, it was grounded in reality”, Ryan said in praising the SC governor’s response to President Barack Obama’s State of the Union address, which was distinguished by her minimally veiled chastising of GOP presidential front-runner Donald Trump.
On Wednesday, Haley told CNN that she was indeed talking about Trump, but also about others in both parties. Cynics – and we oftentimes lump ourselves in that category – will say her leadership in bringing the Confederate flag down from the Statehouse grounds monument was motivated purely by politics.
As was expected, talk of Gov. Haley as a vice presidential candidate gathered steam following her address.
“… If a strong conservative is the nominee for the Republican Party, I honestly don’t think that there’s anyway that Governor Nikki Haley will be the VP for any of them”, she responds.
“Her willingness to stand up and speak out against that took some courage and was it rather conspicuous”.
Her conservative critics unloaded.
After Lauer read her some of the comments that had been posted on the address, Haley said: “I respect all of those people and understand their opinion, but I disagree”.
I know several people who were irritated by the remarks for tactical reasons.
Giridharadas in his New York Times article wasn’t just critical of Haley; he said it was “thrilling” to see Haley attempt to “create a broader, two-party consensus on the simple, exceptional idea that an American is defined by shared hope, not shared blood”.
“Our economy’s doing horribly”, Trump concluded.
South Carolina’s young, charismatic governor Nikki Haley, considered by some a potential vice presidential pick, essentially cleared the way for Trump’s rivals by attacking the rhetoric of the celebrity billionaire. It was focusing on the fact that the name Haley uses now, Nikki, was not the one given to her at birth. He was a supporter.
As for the 2016 GOP presidential hopefuls, Jeb Bush and Chris Christie issued words of support for the SC governor. “But just because you disagree with someone doesn’t mean you’re not a friend”. In her speech, she didn’t even mention the 11 million immigrants living in society’s shadows and had nothing to propose beyond stopping illegal immigration and turning away “refugees whose intentions can not be determined”. “But they gave me the opportunity to say what I think, and that’s what I did”, she said.
“When the World Trade Center came down, I saw something that no place on earth could have handled more beautifully, more humanely than NY”, he said to applause from the SC crowd.
