Nintendo Could Be Working on a VR Device for Nintendo Switch
A new Nintendo patent hints at what could be VR support for its upcoming handheld/console hybrid, the Nintendo Switch.
But how would VR work on the Switch?
As announced previously, Nintendo is taking the Nintendo Switch console on tour ahead of its release in March 2017.
As discovered by NeoGAF user Rösti on the US Patent and Trademark Office’s official site, Nintendo filed a patent on something that looks suspiciously similar to a VR headset.
Nevertheless, the main unit of the video game console is connected via a docking station to the television display and it can be easily used as a portable console by removing it from the television display. The demonstration of this VR headset accessory would be a nice supplement to the expected details about launch games and a launch date confirmation.
It’s important to note, however, that while these patents were published today, December 15, they were filed on June 10. Nintendo Switch will be the star of an interactive multi-city tour that is open to the public on select days.
You can check out the patents in their entirety to see what you can come up with, but it would certainly be an interesting leap forward for the company if this were something that happened to come true.
If the headset is something they want to push then it could be revealed during the big Switch event planned for January 13, but it’s very unlikely that Nintendo will talk about the console’s tech specs. Canadian “Toys R’ Us” reportedly listed Nintendo Switch for $329.99 CAD. The tablet itself has a resolution of 720p, while the console is able to output a full 1080p resolution when docked.
More possibilities for Switch add-on hardware can be located in the booming market of virtual reality.
