Nintendo Ending Japan Sales of Wii U, Shifting to Switch
However, the Japanese Wii U site was updated earlier today with new information underneath the Wii U console suggesting that production is scheduled to end in Japan.
Meanwhile, the Japanese Wii U page, while confirming that production of the console will end “soon”, does not specify when exactly it will happen.
As Nintendo World Report notes, such listings are common in Japan, but notices for other regions aren’t usually noted, and is the case here as well. “Super Smash Bros” has been a best-selling game franchise spanning several of Nintendo’s consoles from the N64 up to the Wii U.
When playing at home, users can place the Switch in a dock that connects the system to a TV for a traditional gaming experience.
The text reads, 近日生産終了予定 (kinjitsu seisan shuuryou yotei), which means, “Production is scheduled to end soon”.
To be clear, similar notices aren’t present in other territories, so it’s uncertain whether production is ending worldwide. Crago added, “We’ve always worked on Nintendo platforms and now of course after Twilight Princess HD our relationship with Nintendo is stronger than ever”.
The Nintendo Wii U launched in Japan on December 8, 2012.
As far as software is concerned, more developers have started talking about the projects that they will be doing for Nintendo’s newest console. Nintendo quickly responded to such reports stating that they hadn’t ceased production and that the console was not going anywhere. Beyond that, Kimishima has allegedly said flat-out that the Nintendo Switch will not replace the Wii U.
