Nixon hopes for big upset as primary battle with Cuomo ends
NY is the only state in the country which has separate election days for federal and statewide primaries.
Cuomo has countered he has a record of passing same-sex marriage and paid family leave in NY state and has declared that “nobody has stood up to Donald Trump like I have”.
“This is an important election”. And that I can’t vote.
With registered Democrats outnumbering Republicans more than 2 to 1 in New York, Cuomo becomes the automatic front-runner in November’s matchup against Republican Marc Molinaro and independent Mayor Stephanie Miner.
Approved and paid for by the New York State Democratic Committee, the mailer accused Nixon of remaining “silent on the rise of anti-Semitism”, and supporting BDS (Boycott, Divestment and Sanctions), a worldwide movement to boycott Israeli goods and cultural exports. “Don’t knock it until you’ve tried it”, Nixon said with a smile as members of the news media asked her about her curious take on the New York City classic.
Nixon further portrayed the governor, whose public service stretches back to his tenure in President Bill Clinton’s Department of Housing and Urban Development, including almost four years as secretary, as insufficiently liberal for today’s Democratic Party. “He needs to say not only is this inappropriate, he needs to say that it’s completely untrue”.
Nixon leapt on what she denounced as a smear campaign, pointing out that she was bringing up two of her children Jewish and attended synagogue.
“Just looking for change”.
“That’s what I want – a full load with cream cheese”, she tells the deli worker.
Amy Schumer, who also lives in the Big Apple, had vacillated between Nixon and Cuomo, first donating $10,000 to Nixon’s campaign before saying earlier this week she would support Cuomo on election day.
“She’s taking responsibility, for one, right?”
She wants the two-term Cuomo, who has always been thought to have presidential ambitions, to re-establish his liberal bona fides for voters calling for change.
‘We voted. And we voted for @cynthiaenixon couldn’t help it, ‘ she explained. “He’s governed like a Republican”.
Nixon is an activist – and an actor, best known for her role on Sex and the City – who has hammered the two-term Democratic incumbent on political corruption, including the conviction of a former close aide, and the sorry state of New York’s mass transit system, which has deteriorated under Cuomo’s tenure.
Voters across the state also cast ballots in a hotly contested party primary for the state’s attorney general. The candidates include Fordham University law professor Zephyr Teachout, New York City Public Advocate Letitia James, U.S. Rep. Sean Patrick Maloney and former Hillary Clinton adviser Leecia Eve.
The victor faces little-known Republican attorney Keith Wofford in November.
