NKorea to hold party congress
Political analysts note that the Workers’ Party of Korea hasn’t convened a congress since 1980, and that one meeting culminating with the announcement that Kim Jong Illinois, the father of the country’s current leader, would eventually take power from his father, the founder of the country.
“We are confronted with the heavy but sacred activity to result in a fantastic upswing in the constructing of a thriving socialist nation”, the party’s political bureau stated, in response to the KCNA.
He added that he remained “convinced” that the Security Council should refer North Korea to the global Criminal Court “to speedily bring to justice those people most responsible for the near-total denial of human rights, and including those at the highest level of decision-making in that country”.
North Korea has begun digging a new tunnel at its nuclear test site, likely with the aim of conducting future tests on atomic devices, a South Korean news report said on Friday.
“The next congress will come in May, North Korea’s official news agency KCNA reported on Thursday”.
Kim Jong-un has visited a new science and technology centre in the North Korean capital Pyongyang. “North Korea seemed to make such a decision by taking into account its internal affairs and foreign relations”, South Korea’s Foreign Ministry spokesman Jeong Joon-hee, saidg.
The congress, however, could mean more than a power shift.
Kim Jong-un, the leader of North Korea, has sent 50,000 of his own people overseas to work in forced labour conditions in China, Russian Federation and the Middle East, receiving more than pounds 1 billion a year in return, the United Nations has claimed.
The move is being made few weeks after the 70th anniversary celebration of the founding of the party, held on October 10. Kim Jong-il’s appearance at the congress confirmed that he was in line to succeed his father as leader. His son and successor Kim Jong Illinois never called a congress, however.
