No. 1 pick Jared Goff to debut Sunday for Los Angeles Rams
Offensive coordinator Rob Boras recognized it and Case Keenum acknowledged as much Wednesday, the day after Coach Fisher removed Keenum as the starting quarterback and elevated Goff, who will make his debut Sunday against the Miami Dolphins at the Coliseum.
Tuesday morning Jeff Fisher left his Kryptonian Fortress of Suck-itude, strode into his office on a cloud of his own farts, and informed Goff and Case Keenum that he would be making a change at quarterback for this Sunday’s game against the Miami Dolphins.
FILE – In this November 13, 2016, file photo, Los Angeles Rams quarterbacks Case Keenum (17) and Jared Goff (16) warm up before an NFL football game against the New York Jets, in East Rutherford, N.J. Keenum, 28, ranks towards the bottom of all major quarterback statistics in the National Football League this season, throwing for 2.169 yards with just nine touchdowns and 11 interceptions, plus five fumbles. After watching the team’s offensive plays, the fans started chanting “We want Goff”. “I told him this is the direction I wanted to go and we’re going that way”. The Rams also traded up to make a splash in their return to Los Angeles after a 21-year sojourn in St. Louis, where they hadn’t made the playoffs since 2004 or had a winning record since 2003.
The Dolphins (5-4) are fielding the league’s seventh best overall pass defense while surrendering the game’s seventh-stingiest completion percentage (61.2) and is responsible for the fifth most interceptions (9). However, there are plenty of issues Goff will have to deal with in his first start outside of inexperience. Goff will look to follow in the footsteps of Dak Prescott and Carson Wentz, rookie quarterbacks from his class who’ve already succeeded and shown signs of promise this season.
So ends a nine-week melodrama in which the football world wondered when Goff would finally get the keys to the kingdom – and pondered various reasons the first pick overall wasn’t able to get on the field. What they need is some competent quarterback play. I trust these coaches and their decision. “I’m excited to watch him play, I’m excited to watch him go through and finish up his first week of preparation as our starter”.
Under the scrutiny of Hard Knocks, Goff joined the Rams for training camp but struggled to get to grips with the playbook and command the offence. And that’s a big part of why Goff will get that start.
The wait is over for Jared Goff, and for Rams fans waiting to see the rookie quarterback in action.
Keenum said he has accepted his role and would continue to do everything possible – on the field, in the film room and in the locker room – to help Goff, but Keenum retained something of a defiant streak.
Goff alone will not fix this offense, of course.
“I don’t go into games having concerns”, Fisher added. “We’re just gonna run our offense regardless of the quarterback”.
“A lot of times in the preseason you’re not really getting too exotic”, Gase said.
