No. 11 UCLA upsets No. 1 Kentucky
But that’s a credit to Kentucky’s defense. But now we’ve seen it, we’ll see it on film, and learn from it.
The Wildcats got to 63-58 on a basket by Chance Comanche before Nigel Williams-Goss hit a floater for the Zags, their last basket of the game with 1:10 to play.
So, can resurgent UCLA, 8-0 record and all, toting its No. 11 ranking, show up under these extreme conditions and not already feel defeated? He might have been too efficient.
Holiday, who started for the Bruins last season, is averaging 12 points per game and 50 percent from three-point range and provides an instant offensive spark when inserted into a game.
So here’s the aftermath: Nobody need be taken surprise anymore by UCLA.
Praise is poison, sometimes, and while I don’t know that it was the main culprit for United Kingdom on Saturday, it did play a part. It’s something mental. I know I can shoot. All the players were telling me to shoot.
The man Willis replaced, freshman starter Wenyen Gabriel, was a team-worst minus-14 in 17 minutes. Freshman Ike Anigbogu from Corona Centennial had five points, five rebounds and two blocks in 10 minutes.
Kentucky coach John Calipari got the gut-check he wanted.
“My first three years all I’ve heard is, ‘He’s not a point guard, he’s not a point guard, ‘” Alford told ESPN. “It was good coming back into big games, probably our two biggest games of the season”.
In the first half, it looked like Kentucky was going to win this game rather handily. “I would like to learn from that lesson a little bit more”, Calipari said. “Had nothing to do with anything”. Martin is leading UC Riverside in scoring at 12.5 points per game.
Want your voice heard? “We can compete with anyone in the country, and I think we showed that”. I’ve been having nausea and stuff. I didn’t even go to sleep last night.
The Kentucky staff had everything sanitized – locker room, dorm rooms, bathrooms, etc – after returning home from the Bahamas. Not that Ball’s game wilted with his six turnovers. What? That is where we got to go with this.
While they forced UCLA into committing 18 turnovers, the Wildcats couldn’t capitalize at the rim as they shot just 41% for the game and a horrid 66% from the FT line.
And then there’s Bam Adebayo. “Dunk the ball, why are you laying it in?”
Isaiah Briscoe inside the UCLA defense. The game will be a barometer of where they stand against the nation’s best.
Kentucky also gave up a season-high 10 three-pointers, the most by an opponent since Auburn made 12 last January 16. “Bryce (Alford) and Isaac are playing with a lot more freedom now and getting better shots”. They surged to a quick lead before falling behind by as many as nine points amid a flurry of fouls and turnovers.
“The reality of it is, we are a defensive team”.
But the Bruins – for the first time in program history – visit Rupp Arena, a building in which the Wildcats, under coach John Calipari, are only 124-4. The Wildcats shoot 32.3 percent from 3-point range and 57.6 percent inside the arc.
Calipari said several players had been under the weather, and because of that he chose not to have a pregame walk-through.
Lecomte, the former Miami transfer, put Baylor ahead to stay with two free throws. And the father who hit almost 90 percent from the line as an Indiana Hoosier was annoyed that son Bryce missed a couple of late free throws. I think consciously be more aware of that.
The Bruins’ second straight win over Kentucky figures to move them into the Top 10.
(At) No. 4 Kansas 89, Stanford 74: Frank Mason III scored 20 points and Devonte Graham delivered an early 3-point barrage and finished with 15 for Kansas.
Ask the No. 1-ranked team the Bruins rumbled through on Saturday afternoon. And in Rupp Arena at that.
UCLA is a mix of youth and experience, a group deep in talent, though not necessarily deep in general.
“We talked about, ‘Don’t go in and jab around the ring to see if you belong”.
The Bruins are 8-0 – five of which, admittedly, came against cupcake opponents at Pauley Pavilion, and all eight of which were played within the greater Los Angeles metropolitan area.
“You know going into Rupp it’s going to be a insane atmosphere and a great team”, Leaf said.
“They played better than us and they played harder than us”, Calipari said after the game.
Lonzo Ball can’t be great just by himself as this game is a team sport.
“I just felt maybe they were mature enough to do this”, he said.
