No. 19 Oklahoma shuts out Kansas State 55-0
The Oklahoma Sooners and Kansas State Wildcats are playing on the BIG 12 college football schedule on Saturday and the game from Bill Snyder Family Stadium, Manhattan, KS starts at October 17, 3:33 PM on ABC with TV coverage…
Defensive back Zack Sanchez returned a Cook pass 38-yards to give the Sooners a 42-0 lead just 22 seconds into the second half.
Dylan Buckingham reports from Manhattan. Despite being unranked, Kansas State came very close to upsetting the No. 2 TCU Horned Frogs as they fell in a heartbreaker.
By now, most (if not all) of you reading this know the situation K-State faces if they lose this Saturday against Oklahoma. Particularly if they get little sleep themselves. Oklahoma has not lost back-to-back regular-season games since 1999, coach Bob Stoops’ first season at Oklahoma….
It was the team’s first shutout defeat since a 12-0 loss at Colorado in 1996, ending a streak of 234 games in which K-State scored. Mayfield’s scrambling ability helped avoid a few sacks, but the Kansas State defense was able to pressure the Sooners quarterback. Dalton Risner, for one, feels Kansas State can pretty much beat anyone at home (Ken Corbitt, Topeka Capital-Journal).
Looking ahead: K-State needs a victory to stay above.
Perhaps Snyder can coach this group to a similar turnaround. He has no touchdown passes but one interception.
Oklahoma was favored by less than a touchdown and the Sooners faced a nine hour travel delay that prevented their chartered flight from landing in Manhattan until midnight, less than 13 hours before kickoff. Texas A&M threatened to get back in the game when, after a 52-yard Bertolet field goal, Allen moved the ball into Alabama territory, but he was again intercepted. Obviously we didn’t expect to get shut out; we thought we had a good game plan. Cook struggled, too, completing 1 of 8 passes for 6 yards and an interception. Two of those long passes went to wide receiver Sterling Shepard, who finished it off with a 22-yard catch.Shepard finished with four catches for 83 yards and two touchdowns.By halftime, numerous sellout crowd of 52,867 had streamed toward the exits, as Oklahoma built a 35-0 lead behind Mayfield’s five touchdown passes.Mayfield finished 20-of-27 before giving way to Trevor Knight at quarterback after three quarters. On the ground, Samaje Perine rushed for 36 yards and one touchdown while Joe Mixon added 24 yards in six attempts. David Glidden and Marcell Ateman have combined for 802 receiving yards and six touchdowns while James Washington has 21 receptions.
They have proven they can play with the Big 12’s best, but this loss revealed the other end of the spectrum.
