No ban on cow slaughter, beef in Delhi
The High Court said the petition seeking to stop the sale of beef products in the state was it “misconceived”.
A bench of Chief Justice G. Rohini and Justice Jayant Nath declined to entertain the plea after the Aam Aadmi Party government informed the court that there is already a law, the Delhi Agricultural Cattle Preservation Act, to protect cattle.
“We can not issue a writ to the Parliament, directing it to make a statute”.
“Direct the respondents (Delhi government, Lt. Governor and Delhi Police) to consider enacting a law prohibiting slaughter of cows, their import/export and sale of beef and its products across Delhi and NCR”, said the plea.
“Section 4 of the Act prohibits slaughter”.
The Delhi High Court on Wednesday asked the city government and police to implement the directions it had given time and again on the safety and security of people from the northeastern states residing in the capital.
While the Bench dismissed the contention saying that it was not a prayer made in the petition, Ghose retorted by telling the lawyer that he should go eat at Andhra Bhawan instead as it serves ‘better food’. The plea was filed by a man claiming to be a monk and his name is Swami Satyananda Chakradhari.
