No confirmed cases of Zika virus in Fiji
In a statement, DSHS said all the people diagnosed with Zika traveled to areas where the virus is spreading. The exact date for the restrictions has yet to be determined, she said. Since the virus was first reported, 200 babies have been born with defects from the illness.
Scientists are working to conclusively link the two.
“It is to our advantage that we already have existing vaccine platforms to use as a sort of jumping-off point”, Fauci said. The first clinical trial is expected to start this summer.
The Center for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) reports that there have been 31 cases of the Zika virus in the US since previous year. About 80 percent of those infected experience no symptoms, making it hard for pregnant women to know whether they have been infected.
Amid concerns over the rapid spread of the Zika virus, Jamaica confirmed Saturday the virus had spread to its shores, and Colombia reported more than 2,000 pregnant women have been infected. The Zika virus can lead to birth defects. The warning has been released due to the continuous spread of the virus.
The World Health Organization has said as many as 4 million people in the Americas may become infected. The WHO is due to hold an emergency meeting on Monday to address the spread of the disease. Brazil has reported 3,700 cases of suspected microcephaly that may be linked to Zika. Little is known about the virus that only causes symptoms in a small number of those it infects.
“Fever, joint aches and pains, rash and red eyes (are symptoms)”, Dr. Barnes said. However, the Public Health England said in their website that they have recorded some cases exhibiting this, although the risk is very low. Jamaican officials are investigating the source of the virus.
There is no vaccine or medication that protects against Zika virus infection. “That means the figures are going up”, the national health institute’s deputy director of transmissible diseases, Diego Alejandro Garcia, said on Colombia’s RCN network.
