You can still enjoy your water ice but Rita’s Italian Ice chain has stopped offering its popular custard due to the national egg shortage.
Rita’s suspends sale of Frozen Custard due to a nationwide egg shortage.
An avian flu outbreak has been affecting egg-laying hens across the country, making eggs less available and driving up their prices.
Rita’s spokeswoman Ariel Vegotsky said all 600 locations across the country will replace the custard with a soft-serve ice cream made with no eggs. Rita’s says all of their signature menu items will still be available during the shortage.
The change will only be temporary, Rita’s assures its customers, saying they plan to bring back custard as soon as they have access to a sustainable supply of eggs.
“Yes, there is a slight difference in taste and texture”, the company writes on its website, in response to the question of if the new ice cream will taste different. The egg in our Frozen Custard provides a rich, creamy flavor and texture – that’s what makes our product so unique!
