‘No Evidence’: Republican Lawmakers Want Answers About President Trump’s Wiretapping Claim
Needless to say, the Justice Department has not issued any kind of statement on the allegations.
The White House did not respond to questions about what prompted the president’s accusations that Obama had tapped his phones. It’s a tool of an authoritarian to just have you always be talking about what you want them to be talking about, rather than Russian Federation, we’re talking about President Obama. As Moss observes, none of the major USA media outlets, such as the New York Times, Washington Post or CNN, have confirmed or repeated Mensch’s reporting – although the Guardian, the BBC and McClatchy have done so.
On Sunday the White House asked Congress to include the allegations in its investigation into whether Russian Federation interfered in the election.
In an interview on NBC’s “Meet The Press”, Rubio said he had never heard these claims before. FBI investigators and Justice Department officials must seek a federal judge’s approval to investigate by demonstrating that probable cause exists.
“There’s nothing I’ve done in my life in public that’s as important as trying to getting this investigation done right and bipartisan, and get the facts out to the American people”, he said. But he said he couldn’t speak for “other authorized entities in the government or a state or local entity”.
Twice now, Trump officials have been caught misleading or lying about their contact with the Russian Ambassador.
Trump’s national security adviser, Michael Flynn, resigned in February after revelations that he had discussed USA sanctions on Russia with the Russian ambassador to the United States before Trump took office.
Spicer ended the statement by saying that neither the White House nor the president would be commenting further until such an oversight is conducted. Or do you believe him?
U.S. Representative Adam Schiff, the top Democrat on the House Intelligence Committee, called Trump’s assertion a “spectacularly reckless allegation”.
Republican lawmakers want more information from President Trump following his unsubstantiated allegations that former President Obama had wiretapped Trump Tower during the 2016 election.
Trump, who offered no evidence for his claims, tweeted Saturday that Obama was a “bad (or sick) guy”, and likened the alleged taps to Watergate. “It weakens the United States, and it makes us vulnerable to our enemies”.
A number of his [Trump’s] advisers believe Obama officials are behind the leaks and are seeking to undermine his presidency, with just the latest example coming from reports that Attorney General Jeff Sessions met twice past year with the Russian ambassador to the USA and apparently misled senators about the interactions during his confirmation hearing. He is said to have made the request on March 4.
