No new Nissan GT-R until 2020
With heavy-hitters new to the stage, such as the Chevrolet Corvette Z06 and McLaren 650S, it’s frankly unbelievable that the Nissan GT-R has stayed so competitive. Although reports from a few years ago suggested that we might be getting a new GT-R using a hybrid powertrain (and hints from more recently suggesting that we might someday have an all-electric version of the sports car), the GT-R faced some serious setbacks as Nissan delayed the new GT-R to work on satisfying USA crash test requirements.
We called Nissan for confirmation.
When as if the Nissan GT-R will be arriving anytime soon, Nissan replied that they are now not talking about the Nissan GT-R yet and that the Nissan GT-R will definitely not be coming in 2018 or 2019. “It’s not on the product plan list for that period”. Up until now, the redesigned GT-R was believed to be slated for a 2018 release.
We don’t know a ton about the next Nissan GT-R, but we’ve at least confirmed from design director Shiro Nakamura that it will remain a 2+2 front-engine coupe with all-wheel drive.
Representatives claim it’s the first time they’d heard anything like that, and that most if not all of the GT-R news comes out of Japan, so they were unable to confirm or deny. Output should easily surpass the 545 hp now found in the GT-R, and possibly eclipse the 600-hp GT-R Nismo.
In any case, when it does come, it is likely that the GT-R will look quite a bit like the 2020 Vision Gran Turismo Concept auto.
