No Nutella for Isis: girl (5) refused personalised jar because name is
A five-year-old girl was not given a personalised jar of Nutella with her name printed on it because her name is Isis.
But her mother, Heather, has said that her daughter was named after the Egyptian goddess Isis long before the jihadists rose to prominence.
Heather Taylor’s children, Isis and Odhinn, from Illawarra, south of Sydney, were shopping with their aunt when they were rejected from personalising a Nutella jar. At first the computer flagged both names as unacceptable, but after some discussion with the store manager, they agreed to print labels with the eight-year-old boy’s name.
Isis was noted as a problematic name due to its reference to the Islamic State of Iraq and al-Sham (ISIS), an acronym for the terrorist group known for brutal killings and murders as well as videos of beheadings and torture.
But Nutella blocked it, despite claiming the personalised labels were meant to be a “fun and joyful” campaign, while the store in Australia told the Taylors that the ban was down to protocol.
Ferrero Australia, Nutella’s parent company, stood by the company position when the rang Ms Taylor.
But Mrs Taylor does not agree that her daughter’s name is offensive, whatever the reaction from the public.
‘This negative publicity of such a attractive name needs to stop now.
The Nutella campaign, which allows fans of the hazelnut spread to personalise a 750 gramme or one kilogramme jar, was launched in September.
“I’m really quite upset by this”, Taylor told Barker, according to the Herald.
“There have been occasions where a label has not been approved on the basis that it could have been misinterpreted by the broader community or viewed as inappropriate”, the company said in a statement to the Huffington Post.
“She also has no intention of changing her daughter’s name, and argues the name Isis needed to be reclaimed”.
Last week, Conservative MP Rehman Chishti wrote to Prime Minister David Cameron, calling on the Government to start using the name Daesh to refer to the group.
