No one expected these weird SAG Award nominations
The film earned three nominations – Best Cast, Lead Actor for Bryan Cranston and Supporting Actress for Helen Mirren. In just four months (release date was August 14), the film has earned the titles of highest grossing biopic and highest grossing movie by a black director by raking in over $161 million domestically. His character in the movie is described by People as “captivating and brutal” and Elba is quoted to have said “It was a awful despicable character …”
The show has also been nominated for “Outstanding Action Performance by a Stunt Ensemble”, which they stand a good chance of winning, given the fact that the show’s stunt team has taken home a trophy every year since 2012 (the first year it was eligible for the SAG Awards). The movie is set to premier in Lagos, Nigeria tomorrow at the Silver Bird Galleria, with Elba and an array of celebrities in attendance.
The Screen Actors Guild have released the nominees for their 2015 awards, which are usually seen as holding important clues for the Oscars.
The SAG awards will air on TBS on January 22, 2016, which means you have roughly 50 days during which you can shriek in anguish and otherwise let your displeasure about various, obvious snubs be known. Ronan was honoured for her role as a homesick immigrant in Brooklyn, as well as Cate Blanchett for Carol, Brie Larson for Room and Sarah Silverman for I Smile Back.
In the best actor category, Cranston is up against Johnny Depp (“Black Mass”), Leonardo DiCaprio (“The Revenant“), Michael Fassbender (“Steve Jobs”) and Eddie Redmayne for the transgender tale “The Danish Girl”.
Supporting actress contenders included Rachel McAdams (Spotlight), Kate Winslet (Steve Jobs), Alicia Vikander (The Danish Girl) and Rooney Mara (Carol). Mark Rylance received a nod for the movie “Bridge of Spies” and Jacob Tremblay was nominated for his role in “Room”. Several Oscarologists see the film getting nominated for at least an acting nod for Damon, but no such luck here.
Kidman also has plenty of competition, with Susan Sarandon (The Secret Life of Marilyn Monroe), Queen Latifah (Bessie), Christina Ricci (The Lizzie Borden Chronicles) and Kristen Wiig (The Spoils Before Dying) the other nominees.
Viola Davis landed one nomination for her role as Annalise Keating in the ABC drama How to Get Away With Murder in the category for Oustanding Performance by a Female Actor in a Drama Series.
On the television side, Netflix’s political drama “House of Cards” led the field with three nominations, for best actor (Kevin Spacey), best actress (Robin Wright) and best cast performance in a drama series.
Nominees for best comedic ensemble are “Big Bang Theory”, “Key and Peele”, “Modern Family“, “Orange Is the New Black“, “Transparent” and “Veep”.
