No peace can come to Syria without Assad – Lavrov
He says it’s unimaginable that Syria’s civil war can be stopped without Assad leaving power.
Russian Federation is calling on the US-led coalition to join forces and defeat IS, arguing that a peaceful resolution will only be possible in Syria after violence is stopped.
Still, the growth of Islamic State in Syria and Iraq, and its suspected role in the recent terror attacks, has intensified calls in Washington and Europe for a unified position with Russian Federation.
Obama has said the only way the USA would coordinate with Russian Federation against Islamic State is if there’s evidence Russia’s strikes in Syria are targeting jihadists rather than opponents of Assad.
U.S. Secretary of State John Kerry told the BBC on Tuesday that pushing Assad out “has to be part of a transition if you’re going to end the war”.
He emphasized the fact that the passing of “two documents that are consensual and state the principles Russian Federation has been consistently advancing since the Syrian crisis began, testify to the fact that our western partners have realized hopelessness of the stance many of them adhered to”, referring to the ultimatum that Bashar Al-Assad should step down.
He told Italian state television that if Syria’s people want presidential elections “there will be no red line” against holding them.
Assad said the Islamic extremists who have trained in Syria were only able to do so thanks to “the support of the Turks and the Saudis and Qatari, and of course the Western policy that supported the terrorists in different ways”.
Russian fighter jets have bombed a series of towns to destroy ISIS.
The president proclaimed that France is “at war” with terrorists, but also warned against overreactions. With France moving to bolster its own bombing operations, Moscow appeared eager to stage a show of unity.
“They failed to reach an agreement on the ceasefire by this morning, but the negotiations are ongoing”, said Rami Abdel Rahman, the head of the Syrian Observatory for Human Rights monitoring group. “Maybe it’s getting through to them”, Talbott said.
As France called for cooperation in fighting the Islamic State, the United Kingdom’s Defense Ministry announced it is sending a warship to support French aircraft carrier Charles de Gaulle, which is being deployed to carry out strikes against Islamic State in Syria. “The same as we did after the terrorist attacks on September 11, 2001”, Lavrov said. Article 42.7 states that if a member of the European Union is the victim of “armed aggression on its territory”, other member states have an “obligation of aid and assistance by all the means in their power” consistent with their obligations to North Atlantic Treaty Organisation.
But there are hints that Russia’s support may be wobbling even as it ramps up airstrikes against his enemies: Moscow made clear earlier this month it is not crucial that he stay.
Mr. Putin held separate discussions with leaders of Saudi Arabia and the U.A.E.in the Black Sea resort of Sochi on October 11 to discuss Syria, said officials briefed on the diplomacy.
