No Powerball winner: jackpot rises to $1.3 billion
All six numbers must be correct to win, but the first five numbers could be drawn in any order.
Nationwide, more than $1 billion in Powerball tickets were sold, lottery officials said.
California normally sees Powerball sales of $US1 million a day, but on Saturday morning sales were $US2.8 million an hour, according to California Lottery spokesman Mike Bond.
The Powerball lottery was operated by the Multi-State Lottery Association (MUSL).
The drawing will again be held at 10:59 p.m. Eastern Time.
For example, the above photo showing a billboard advertising the $900 million Powerball jackpot on Saturday, January 9, in Lincoln, Nebraska, has the “million” in a non-computerized format. While you’d make back some of your investment on smaller prizes paid for matching three, four or five numbers plus the Powerball, chances are it still isn’t a good bet. Keep it in perspective because the odds of winning the Powerball jackpot are not in your favor.
“The Powerball game is the 3rd most popular game in North Carolina”, added Van Denton with the North Carolina Education Lottery.
People across the country dreamed about what they’d do with the largest lottery prize in US history – vacationing in warm climates, sharing with family members – and could still be thinking big in the coming days. A ticket holder would only get $1.3 billion if he took the payout over time and invested it – something virtually no lottery victor ever does. And that is all but certain to grow before the next drawing Wednesday, according to lottery officials. “At our peak last night, we were selling more than $1.2 million in Powerball tickets every single minute”.
The odds to win the lottery prize were one in 292.2 million. “It’s a new experience for all of us”. Lottery officials estimated that 75% of all possible combinations had been bought by Saturday night.
Darryl Collins, of Phoenix, and his husband each won $24 from the 70 Powerball tickets they bought.
“Ever since then, I go, hell, if it happened once, it’s gotta happen again”, Diaz said.
Over in the United Kingdon, there were two winners of the record £66 million (€87.7m) jackpot, BBC News reports.
