No quick fix for United’s problems, says van Gaal
Manchester United manager Louis van Gaal has seemingly questioned the rules surrounding time added on.
Manchester United ended their winless run with a narrow victory over Swansea City at Old Trafford.
The clever back-heel finish was Rooney’s 188th Premier League goal, taking him past former United striker Andy Cole and into second place behind Alan Shearer.
Rooney moved ahead of Denis Law in the United scoring charts when he flicked Anthony Martial’s cross into the net to seal a much-needed 2-1 win over Swansea on Saturday.
“That’s the reason – it’s not that we want to play risky football”. “It’s good to see both our main strikers scoring”, he said, hoping that they can “kick on now, because we can’t afford any more slip-ups”.
“We have to be at the top of the league”.
Now he believes United’s title challenge is back on track, saying: “We are still near the top of the league and the gap is less”.
Alex Tettey’s 76th-minute goal gave Norwich a 1-0 victory over Southampton, who suffered their seventh defeat in nine games after Victor Wanyama had been sent off for two bookings on a day when Sadio Mane was dropped by Saints boss Ronald Koeman. Most important are the players because they have to perform. I think we played very risky, very attacking, with three defenders, but we wanted to win and scored two fantastic goals today.
The win is United’s first since November 21 and eases the pressure on Van Gaal, whose position has come under scrutiny in recent weeks. “In the second half we created fewer chances but we scored”.
“I have to say I enjoyed the first half more than the second, but we scored in the second and that’s the big difference”. A number of strikers parted ways with Man United in the summer including Javier Hernández who was sold to Bayern Leverkusen and Robin van Persie who deflected to Fenerbahce.
Van Gaal’s side are now on pace to score just 44 Premier League goals, which would shatter the team’s previous low of 58 set in 2004/05, when they finished third.
Manchester United are still a team under severe pressure but there is a slight renewed sense of optimism around Old Trafford after Monday night’s 0-0 draw to Chelsea.
