No snow this Christmas, but we will get a full moon
A rare full moon called the “Full Cold Moon” glowed over the Earth, brightening the night sky just before the Christmas Day.
A bright full moon, the first on Christmas since 1977, was on display. “The geologic history of the moon and Earth are intimately tied together, such that the Earth would be a dramatically different planet without the moon”.
NASA has a spacecraft now orbiting the Earth’s moon. From Dec. 17-22, the asteroid was flying in the space at a distance of 7.3 million miles or 12 million kilometers from Earth. We just missed a full moon on Christmas 19 years ago; instead, the full moon fell on Christmas Eve.
The last time there was a full moon on 25 December was 1977, and there won’t be another one until 2034 – so unless you want a long wait to catch a sight of this rare astronomical occurence, it’s a good idea to head outside and look up on Christmas.
The moon reached its peak size at 6:11 a.m. ET.
“The moon cycles every 29.5 days, meaning every 29.5 days, there will be a full moon….”
But NASA is already aware of how the moon will appear next year thanks to its lunar planner.
In December 1977, Jimmy Carter was president and George Lucas’ Star Wars, released six months earlier, had become the highest grossing film of all time.
If you’re looking for Santa and his reindeer, maybe you’ll spot him in front of a full Christmas moon.
