Nokia VR Headset To Be Announced Next Week
Microsoft still owns Nokia’s phone business at the moment, but Nokia Technologies is completely independent and is one of the few large companies that isn’t restricted to making a device exclusively for one platform or operating system.
After experiencing decline in sales of their smartphones, Nokia is now eyeing the virtual reality bandwagon with its first VR expected to see the light of day next week.
With simple and affordable products like Google Cardboard and more advanced offerings like the Gear VR from Samsung, HTC and Valve‘s Vive headset, Sony’s Project Morpheus and others, Nokia stands to find some footing in a growing space which has products ranging from low to high cost with a focus on multiple consumer groups.
Recode also revealed that Nokia had been very active in terms of networking equipment and was reportedly in the process of acquiring their former competitor Alcatel-Lucent. The same unit is working to get back into the phone business next year via a licensing deal. Nokia Technologies issued invitations to the event on July 28 that included the words: “Nowhere/Now Here”, according to the report.
Nokia Technologies, which would handle the VR venture, is the smallest of the company’s three units, after Here and Networks. The N1 includes the Z Launcher.
No details on to what sort of virtual reality headset Nokia plans to announced on July 28, but as we’re getting closer to announcement we hope to more info will leak online, so stay tuned.
The VR market has enjoyed somewhat of an upswing in recent months, as several major manufacturers capture public interest with new devices. “Next year is critical”. Gattis said that more importantly, virtual reality needs to wow gaming enthusiasts and technology early adopters to avoid a repeat of past failures.
