Non-Aligned summit set to back Maduro in Venezuela
During the 17th NAM Summit, world leaders are committed to create agreements for the promotion and defense of world peace, one of the fundamental principles of the movement.
Delegates from 120 countries gathered on the Caribbean island of Margarita for the 17th NAM summit, which is scheduled to last until Sunday.
Ahead of the meeting, the NAM’s Coordinating Committee held its last session on September 11 at the United Nations headquarters in NY, chaired by Iran, to make arrangements for the Margarita summit. Sri Lanka is a founder member of the Movement and hosted the 5th NAM Summit in Colombo in 1976.
“The Summit on September 17-18 will be preceded by deliberations at the ministerial and senior official levels”, a statement said.
A press release from the Ministry of External Affairs said the summit was expected to deliberate on issues of contemporary relevance and concern such as terrorism, United Nations reforms, the situation in West Asia, threats to peace and security, UN peacekeeping operations, climate change, sustainable development, economic governance, south-south cooperation, refugees and migrants, and nuclear disarmament.
The summit is expected to bring together leaders from the 120 developing countries that are members of the movement. All these issues are of relevance in the context of the discussions that will take place at the United Nations in coming months.
He will then leave Mexico to attend the Non-Aligned Movement’s foreign ministers meeting which will be held on September 15-16 on Venezuela’s Margarita Island, ISNA news agency reported September 14.
The NAM said it considers the unilateral sanctions a “violation of worldwide law, including the United Nations Charter and the basic principles of global law of relations between states”.
With the slogan “United on the Path for Peace”, Venezuelan Foreign Minister Delcy Rodríguez gave the inaugural speech Tuesday as her country assumes the organization’s rotating presidency for the next three years after taking over from Iran.
A delegation from the Foreign Ministry would also attend the summit meeting under the instructions of Foreign Minister Mangala Samaraweera, sources said.
