Noomi Rapace set to take centre stage in Amy Winehouse biopic
Earlier this year, Amy, a documentary about her life, premiered at the Cannes Film Festival.
The film has been written by Kristen Sheridan who would also direct should a studio pick up the title.
Noomi Rapace will reportedly play Amy Winehouse in an unofficial biopic of the late singer. It also attracted controversy, with Amy’s father Mitch Winehouse claiming the portrayal of him as careless and irresponsible was “very hurtful”.
We’re going to invite everyone that’s spoken on the other film and we’re not going to edit it, like they’ve edited me, and we’re going to tell the truth about Amy’s life because this is not. It took 11 years after Kurt Cobain’s death for someone to play the Nirvana frontman in a movie (Michael Pitt, in Gus Van Sant’s terrible Last Days); for Winehouse, it’s less than five years.
Neither of the projects necessarily sounds like they could move forward immediately. Mitch Winehouse, however, has spoken against the documentary.
Coming from Subotica Films, who have biopic experience with Jimi: All Is by My Side and City Entertainment, if this sells well on the American Film Market, expect more updates soon.
Negotiations are now taking place for the music rights for the film, which will be looking to repeat the box office success of this year’s documentary about Winehouse, Amy.
