Normandy, Missouri: Police Allege That Teenager Shot Himself In The Face
Officers have reported to the media that the young man, who has been identified as Amonderez Green, was suicidal and shot himself in the face.
Green was black. The Normandy officer is white.
Activists at Sanders’ press conference pressed her about discrepancies between her account and those provided by alleged eyewitnesses. The Justice Department called on Ferguson in March to revamp its criminal justice system, declaring that the city had engaged in constitutional violations.
Green’s family disputes the police versions of events.
Normandy police Cpl. Tameika Sanders said there was no question that Green killed himself. Green fell in the grass after police opened fire on him, she said.
Green ran through back yards on Ellington towards Paddington. The officers then reportedly found the suspect on the ground, unresponsive. A gun was recovered at the scene.
A man who shot himself during an altercation with police Wednesday near Ferguson, Mo., died from his injuries Thursday.
The man was rushed to a local hospital, and is in critical condition.
Deron Smith lives in the neighborhood and said he had seen part of the chase.
He told the Post-Dispatch he heard six to eight gunshots behind his home and went outside to investigate. She maintains that none of their bullets hit him and he ran away, causing the officers to lose sight of him. An autopsy is pending, police said.
Simpson told the Post-Dispatch that “he and other family members told an arriving officer that “they had it covered” before the confrontation began”.
Another video shows officers running and features the voice of a woman screaming, “Don’t shoot my baby”, followed by a gunshot and what appears to be a male voice yelling, “Don’t kill me”. His whole right side of his face was gone.
The dramatic video added fuel to the fire and will no doubt, make it harder for police to prove it was a suicide.
Normandy Chief of Police Col. Frank Mininni told HuffPost that St. Louis County police were assisting his department in probing the incident.
While the incident took place in Normandy, Missouri, witnesses say that a few of the responding officers were wearing Ferguson police uniforms. She said the Normandy officer who fired his service weapon is on administrative leave.
Normandy officers do not have body cameras. However witnesses to the incident say that Green was shot in the face by cops with a few even saying that the teenager was unarmed.
