North Carolina student walked out of school alone
The day of action consisted of a 17-minute walkout to protest gun violence, in honor of the 17 students and staff that died in the February shooting at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School in Parkland, Florida.
At Rawlins, principal Darren Heslep planned an assembly so the students he’s responsible for would know school faculty and staff are working to make the high school as safe as possible. Here in Pensacola there were schools who participated.

Student organizers for the walkout at Pascagoula High School said they are very proud of so many of their peers came out to support this cause.
A parent of one of the students who walked out said she did not agree with the walkout.
All across the US, young protestors were out in force, calling for new gun safety legislation, including a ban on both assault weapons and high-capacity magazines, and for universal background checks.
Kids at our school today walked out, in honor of the 17 students killed in Florida. At the beginning of each minute, someone spoke about each victims. In addition to immigration issues, which she’s been paying attention to for a while, gun violence has also become an area where she would like to get involved in making change, she said.
“I was just doing what was right and I was just glad that I could be there and facilitate that for them”, she said.
“They are the power”.
Schools in the Nogales and Santa Cruz Valley unified school districts are on spring break this week, and therefore didn’t participate in a walkout.
“I don’t think this is a protest”.
Junior Corazón Núñez is turning 18 this year and will vote for the first time in the mid-term elections.
A bright spot, if any, that can come from the tragedy has been students’ discourse with one another and being open to varying points of view, she said. “We tend to be strong during laughter not show much emotions with crying”, said a third student. While it was previously reported he sustained minor injuries, a family friend told Fox News he was taken to urgent care because his arm was broken in two places. “But this is not the world I want to live in”.
While the Constitution protects the right for citizens to own a firearm, I would like to see lawmakers take a stand against gun violence in schools by banning assault weapons.
According to the group of student protesters at North Bend, the protest really resonates with some of them because of a false alarm lockdown that happened a year ago, when a shooter was thought to be on the North Bend campus.
“I did not expect this many people to come out, and that was awesome, that so many people cared, and that they wanted to take part”, Johnson said.
Every bit of this protest, while supported by the administration, was organized and led by the students themselves. At Academy Del Sol, students prayed with youth pastors from The Worship Center underneath the school’s flag pole. They held signs showing support for Stoneman Douglas.
“I want to make sure that kids not only know how to walk out into the streets and have their voices be heard, but that they know how to pick up their phone and call their representative, and convert that passion and that outrage into concrete political action”, said Zoe Davidson, co-founder of Coalition Z.
