The Trump administration has been aggressively pressing Beijing to rein in its ally and neighbor North Korea, warning that all options were on the table if Pyongyang persists with its nuclear and missile development.
North Korea conducted another missile test on Saturday, its third launch in April alone, which reportedly failed soon after launch, and its Foreign Ministry said Monday the country will speed up measures to bolster its nuclear program “at the maximum pace”. The North Korean government called the military training “an impressive act of military provocation again” on its state-run news network, Korean Central News Agency (KCNA), according to Korea Times.
Moon has said he would be willing to go to anywhere, including to Pyongyang, to make progress on denuclearizing North Korea.
In recent months, the USA has bolstered measures to protect its allies from the nuclear threat emanating from North Korea. North Korea, which condemns the drill as a rehearsal for invasion, has threatened to turn the aircraft carrier into a “giant heap of scrap metal” and “bury it in the sea”.
In defense of Trump’s invitation to Duterte, House Chief of Staff Reince Priebus said the intention was to help address the situation in the Korean peninsula.
It is unsettling that we have to deal with a USA leader who habitually resorts to bravado, bluster and loud talk and, more seriously, exhibits inconsistency and incoherence in a policy as critical as the one on North Korea. The North makes no secret of its intention to develop a nuclear weapons system capable of striking the US mainland.
“Kim Jong Un would be delighted to meet President Trump on the basis of one nuclear leader to another”, said Christopher R. Hill, a career diplomat who was special envoy on North Korea under President George W. Bush. While it raised the issue with the U.N. Security Council to tighten economic sanctions on North Korea, the US also tried to persuade China to use its economic leverage on Kim to stop its nuclear and missile programs.

In an interview with Bloomberg, Trump said he would be “honored” to meet with Kim.
