North Korea’s new satellite flew over Super Bowl site
North Koreans gather at the Kim Il Sung Square to celebrate a satellite launch on Monday, Feb. 8, 2016, in Pyongyang, North Korea.
McDowell added that if the previous satellite was ever able to transmit any signals it is likely that it did so only for a few hours. North Korean leader Kim Jong Un was also pictured with the white rocket as it lifted off as he was surrounded by a cheering military entourage.
Last night one of North Korea’s satellites flew over Levi Stadium, according to the Associate Press.
Over the years, many countries have speculated about the reasons why North Korea has lanched its satellites.
At an emergency meeting Sunday of the U.N. Security Council which includes the US, all 15 council members approved a statement condemning the launch and pledging to “expeditiously” adopt a new resolution with “significant” new sanctions.
The Kwangmyongsong carrier rocket blasted off from the Sohae launch facility at 9 a.m. Sunday (7:30 p.m. ET Saturday), entering orbit nine minutes and 46 seconds after liftoff, North Korea’s state news agency KCNA reported. The objects appeared to be the satellite and the final stage of the rocket booster, said arms control expert David Wright, co-director of the Union of Concerned Scientists Global Security Program.
The North Korean National Aerospace Development Administration has called the launch “an epochal event in developing the country’s science, technology, economy and defense capability by legitimately exercising the right to use space for independent and peaceful purposes”, while the USA and its worldwide allies believe that the launch was actually a covert missile test. The first satellite was successfully launched into space in 2012.
The controversial satellite launched by North Korea over the weekend is now “tumbling in orbit”, according to U.S. officials. “I would put it down to nothing more than a coincidence, but an interesting one”. Even China, the North’s lone ally, articulated its disapproval in a statement from its foreign ministry.
