North Korea threatens attack on Guam by mid-August
President Donald Trump later offered reassurance to residents of Guam.
“Somebody has to do it”, Trump said. “They will be met with fire, fury and, frankly, power the likes of which this world has never seen before”. “He does something in Guam, it will be an event the likes of which nobody has seen before – what will happen in North Korea”. Rival powers China and Russian Federation, meanwhile, might see the exposed weakness as an opportunity to push forward more assertive policies of their own.
The tweet came as Trump traded escalating threats with North Korea. The sanctions prompted the new heated volley of rhetoric.
“The commentary comes after President Trump doubled-down on his Tuesday warning to North Korean leader Kim Jong Un by telling reporters at his golf club in New Jersey that perhaps his words “may not be tough enough”. Another included a video clip of Trump vowing to respond to North Korean threats with “fire and fury”.
Neither Secretary of State Rex Tillerson, or Secretary of Defence Jim Mattis had “reviewed in advance” Trump’s threat.
In remarks to reporters after a meeting with US Secretary of State Rex Tillerson and US Ambassador to the United Nations Nikki Haley, Trump said the situation with North Korea was “very unsafe and it will not continue”.
“The most important task at hand is for the US and North Korea to “hit the brakes” on their mutual needling of each other with words and actions, to lower the temperature of the tense situation and prevent the emergence of an ‘August crisis, ‘” Wang was quoted as saying in the Tuesday conversation.
European Union foreign policy chief Federica Mogherini’s spokeswoman said Wednesday that the developments are “of great concern to the European Union”.
But Calvo said it was the military which provided protection. The rotations also came as North Korea increasingly upped the ante in the standoff over its development of nuclear weapons. “We will maintain our monitoring and surveillance at a high level and take all possible means to cope with any situation”, Suga said during a Friday press conference.
Calling it “the responsibility of all”, Macron called on the worldwide community to “act in a concerted, firm and effective manner, as it has just done in the (U.N.) North Korea’s army released a statement Wednesday repeating and specifying its threat to launch nuclear-capable missiles near Guam, a US territory home to massive US Air Force and Navy bases.
In a statement Saturday, Macron said the situation “undermines the preservation of worldwide peace” and the North Korean regime “poses a serious threat to the security of its neighbors”.
Some local kids being interviewed by the local newspaper, on the other hand, said they’re “freaked out”.
ONGOING tensions between US President Donald Trump and North Korean dictator Kim Jong-un has put the island of Guam at the centre of an global nuclear stand-off.
Such declarations, however, do not indicate a new, more aggressive posture. There is an anti-missile unit, focused nearly exclusively on North Korea (another anti-missile system has been installed in South Korea).
It continued, “If the Trump administration does not want the American empire to meet its tragic doom in its tenure, they had better talk and act properly”.
Trump also said he would soon announce a request for a budget increase of “billions of dollars” for anti-missile systems.
Though Pyongyang did not threaten the USA territory of Guam with nuclear attack, the heightened tension arising from North Korea’s latest intercontinental ballistic missile (ICBM) test which drew global condemnation and prompted wider United Nations.
The ministry quoted Lavrov as saying tensions could rise again with the USA and South Korea set to launch large-scale military exercises on August 21.
