Friday’s threat by North Korea comes amid increased tensions between Washington and Pyongyang, with US President Donald Trump repeatedly vowing to put an end to North Korea’s nuclear and ballistic missile programs.
The comments echo remarks from high-level staffers in Washington who have said the USA would prefer a diplomatic solution to North Korea’s rapidly developing weapons programs, while the Trump administration made a decision to pursue a policy dubbed “maximum pressure and engagement”.
North Korea has little the world wants.
This week, North Korean state television claimed that they would “turn the USA into a pile of ash” if Trump used military force to contain their nuclear program, the latest in a series of similar threats against Washington and Seoul.

The Trump administration has also grown concerned about conditions in China for North Korean labor crews that are contracted through Pyongyang and provide hard currency for the North Korean leadership. “Even today, it shows no signs of collapsing, and the North Koreans show no signs of rebelling en masse”.

Every decision, within and without the country, is calculated to bring about the desired effect of maintaining power and the survival of the regime.

It’s too late for all that. But this time around they should not be lifted, despite the prospect of ensuing chaos in North Korea.
