North Korea vows in UN speech to strengthen nuclear forces
South Korea’s Foreign Minister Yun Byung-se on Thursday told the U.N. General Assembly that North Korea’s nuclear and missile programs presented “a direct existential threat” and said his country had no choice but to take “necessary defensive measures”.
“Going nuclear-armed is the policy of our state”, he said.
North Korea went on the offensive Friday, blasting the United States for “aggression” in Asia, blaming Washington for its pursuit of nuclear weapons and threatening Americans with “tremendous consequences beyond imagination”.
“The worldwide system is being exploited by (North Korea). for the goal of pursuing an illegal nuclear and missiles program that threatens both its neighbors and regional peace and security”.
Ri called the test and other provocations a practical countermeasure against sanctions and USA hostility.
He spoke just two weeks after North Korea s fifth and most powerful nuclear test provoked worldwide condemnation, prompting the UN Security Council to begin work on a new sanctions resolution.
The foreign minister also denounced U.N. Security Council sanctions Resolution 2270 and asked why other nuclear weapons states have never been sanctioned.
A message from the Korean People’s Army said the imperialist U.S. is guilty of pushing the situation towards an imminent nuclear war by bringing strategic nuclear bombers to the Korean peninsula, Efe news agency reported.
Meanwhile, North Korea accused the United States of pushing the peninsula to the brink of war after this week’s flyover of two US B-1B bombers close to the DMZ or demilitarized zone that separates North and South Korea. Even the entire focus of the USA has been on tightening sanctions against the impoverished country, which is already under five sets of United Nations sanctions. “We will sternly and strongly retaliate if provoked”, the statement added.
“That is a big step”, Klingner said, “it will impact the people of North Korea”.
Dunford said Wednesday that “China seeks to limit our ability to project power and to undermine the credibility of our alliances in the Pacific”.
In the meantime, US military officials are planning. They later concurred Obama’s statement by announcing that the United States may launch unilateral sanctions against North Korea.
