A trade war with the US could make it less attractive for China to use its influence over North Korea to help the USA achieve its objectives of denuclearization. He considers Trump’s good relations with Kim and his decision to suspend the exercises as parts of a diplomatic plan that is getting clearer.
The next exercise was scheduled for August with some 17,500 USA military personnel due to take part.
The expected development would come after the unprecedented meeting between US President Donald Trump and North Kora leader Kim Un Jong in Singapore. In March, South Korea’s national security adviser, Chung Eui-yong, visiting the White House after meeting with Kim in Pyongyang, said Kim understood such drills must go on. It doesn’t particularly want a nuclear-armed neighbor, so it’s all for encouraging North Korea’s denuclearization. It has agreed to discuss denuclearization and to close a nuclear test area.
North Korea is estimated to have thousands massive artillery guns hidden in hardened shelters among the hills and mountains of the country’s rugged terrain. Editorials have also urged the global community to relieve sanctions against the regime as a reward for denuclearization.
An expert in the field says this could reflect China’s efforts to establish a solid role for itself on issues surrounding the Korean Peninsula. “I believe that they will find a midway point”. “Over here, in our country, some people would rather see this historic deal fail than give Trump a win, even if it does save potentially millions & millions of lives!” “South Korean military maneuvers”, according to a North Korean source in Beijing.
They historically include live-fire drills with tanks, aircraft and warships and feature about 10,000 American and 200,000 Korean troops.
