Northern Arizona IDs victims in campus shooting; 1 dead
“This is not going to be a normal day at NAU”, said the school’s president, Rita Cheng.
Brown says she doesn’t know what caused the shooting and also didn’t have any details about the suspect and victims, their conditions and whether they are students.
At about 1:20 a.m., Northern Arizona’s police department responded to a report of shots fired on campus, according to a university news release.
“NAU is one of the last colleges I thought it would happen at the town itself the students everyone seems very friendly”. He played varsity lacrosse as a junior and senior for the Sabercats.
According to the school’s website, the building is a dorm housing most of the campus’ Greek system students.
“This shouldn’t have happened, especially to him”, she said.
The two men were close growing up and reunited during a chance meeting in Las Vegas in June.
Representatives from the Delta Chi fraternity’s national organisation said its members were involved in the confrontation but did not have information about the victims.
University officials said the suspected shooter was in custody, and police spokesman JT Fowler identified him as 18-year-old Steven Jones, believed to be a freshman at the campus. “When I think of Flagstaff, I think safety”, he said.
The victims being treated at Flagstaff Medical Centre are Nicholas Prato, Kyle Zientek and Nicholas Piring.
An overnight confrontation between two groups of students escalated into gunfire Friday when a freshman at Northern Arizona University killed one person and wounded three others, authorities said.
Alex McIntosh, a friend of Mr Zientek, said he worked part-time at High Country Conference Centre while attending the school full-time. The organization said it was seeking the university’s help in providing counseling to its members.
Rep. Ann Kirkpatrick, who lives in Flagstaff, expressed confidence that the city “will only grow stronger in hard moments like these”.
NAU is a public university with over 27,000 students, about 20,000 of whom are enrolled at the school’s main campus in Flagstaff.
She called it an “isolated and unprecedented incident” and confirmed classes would go on as scheduled.
The shooting occurred in a parking lot outside Mountainview Hall dormitory at the northeast side of the Flagstgaff campus.
