Northern California bus accident kills 2, injures others
– Two people died and 12 others were injured when a Greyhound bus overturned on U.S. Highway 101 near state Highway 85 in South San Jose Tuesday morning, according to the California Highway Patrol.
CBS SF Bay Area and Bay City News Service said the bus “careened into safety barrels” before it overturned and came to rest on the center divider. Emergency workers said five people had significant injuries and 13 had less severe injuries.
There were about 20 people aboard the bus, along with the bus driver.
Greyhound spokeswoman Lanesha Gipson said the bus – No. 86558 – was on schedule traveling from Los Angeles to San Francisco with stops in both San Jose and Oakland. Miceli said the accident is under investigation and the Santa Clara County district attorney has been notified, which Miceli said is a routine measure.
A passenger told KTVU the bus had been weaving back and forth before the crash. But conditions were rainy and KCBS reported that passengers said the driver fell asleep at the wheel, but investigators did not confirm the claims.
The crash sent debris flying across the highway, some of which struck a auto in the southbound lanes, officials said. The CHP estimates it will take until at least 4 p.m. Tuesday to clear all lanes. No other vehicles were involved.
