Northern Virginia Weather: Winter storm warning issued for Monday evening and Tuesday
The National Weather Service has issued winter weather advisories, winter storm watches and warnings in portions of the Northeast, including New York City, Pittsburgh and Providence, Rhode Island.
The winter storm warning issued at 3:22 p.m. Monday included Randolph, Pocahontas and Webster counties, extending until 2 a.m. Wednesday.
Snowfall may continue into Tuesday morning, the National Weather Service said.
The heaviest snowfall was expected Tuesday morning through the afternoon, with snowfall rates as high as 2 to 4 inches per hour.
The blustery weather descending on Boston is expected to bring up to 16 inches of snow to the city by Wednesday. “Low pressure will develop off the Caroline coast Monday and move northeast toward the Mid-Atlantic by Tuesday”. Saturday may have a mix of rain and snow, with a 50 percent chance of precipitation.
It’s a synoptic storm being generated by a massive upper-level trough of cold Canadian air and a coastal Nor’easter that’s forecast to impact areas from southern Minnesota to Chesapeake Bay and up into Maine.
The US is bracing itself for the worst storm of the winter with warnings of record-low temperatures and unsafe travelling conditions. 5-10 inches are expected for Washington DC. The city could see 6 to 12 inches of snow. The further west from I-95 the higher the totals will be. That storm now looks likely and it may be large enough to spread significant snow and wind to our area. Temperatures will climb to near 40 degrees with east winds 5 to 10 miles per hour.
Moderate coastal flooding is expected during high tide, forecasters warned.
“State agencies are taking proactive steps to ensure Pennsylvania is ready for the incoming winter weather and Pennsylvanians should take their own precautions and prepare for adverse conditions, especially for travel”, Gov. Tom Wolf (D) said in a statement. Only travel in an emergency.
