Notre Dame football players arrested in 2 incidents
“Any student arrested on a felony charge also faces dismissal from the university”, Paul Browne, Notre Dame’s vice president for public affairs and communications, said in a statement.
In addition, a sixth Notre Dame player, Devin Butler was arrested early Saturday morning near a bar in South Bend, Indiana and has a preliminary battery charge against a police officer.
Kelly said the other four players who were arrested – sophomore running back Dexter Williams, sophomore linebacker Te’von Coney, sophomore cornerback Ashton White and freshman receiver Kevin Stepherson – will be subject to further internal disciplinary measures, but have not been dismissed from the team. The trooper had his police dog conduct a free air sniff around the vehicle and it indicated the presence of the drug. Prosecutor Kenneth Cotter said Saturday he was seeking court approval for additional time to investigate the case so his office could “determine whether formal charges are appropriate”. All five players were booked on misdemeanor marijuana possession. Redfield, Stepherson and Williams face an additional misdemeanor charge of possession of an unlicensed handgun.
It was not immediately clear if they had attorneys who could comment on their behalf.
A police post indicates that the five players were arrested on US 31 in Fulton County allegedly going 73 miles per hour in a 60 miles per hour zone.
The football players were released on bond around 12:30 p.m. When this happened, Devin Butler reportedly became very angry towards one of the women in the group.
The players were arrested in two separate incidents on Friday night and Saturday morning.
The officer was taken to a hospital for treatment for minor injuries, including a sore wrist, he said. The senior does have starting experience but was expected to compete for a backup position when he returned. Coney was a backup linebacker last season who appeared in eight games during his freshman year.
But no SEC school in recent memory has had a night as bad as Notre Dame had on Friday night.
