Notre Dame’s Greg Bryant declared academically ineligible
With running back Greg Bryant ruled academically ineligible for the season, CJ Prosise has officially moved from wide receiver to the backfield. Kelly said Tuesday that Bryant is permitted to practice, but will not occupy a spot on the 105-man roster.
“There are specific expectations inside our program that have to be met each day”, Kelly’s assertion learn.
One of the Freshman will need to supplement the Notre Dame running attack. Carlisle attempted just seven rushes in 2014.
Bryant was already reportedly facing a suspension to begin the 2015 season.
Overall, this is a deep Irish team heading into 2015.
The loss of Bryant for the entire year means leading returning rusher Tarean Folston will have to carry a bigger load after having 889 yards last year and freshmen Dexter Williams and Josh Adams will be forced into early playing time. HC Brian Kelly has praised Bryant in the past.
What his football future holds beyond that is unclear, whether he sits a season and returns next year like Everett Golson or if he transfers out as others before him have done. He had been competing for the starter’s job with Malik Zaire. However, in eight of the final nine games, he failed to rush for more than 14 yards in those games. His three rushing TDs were fourth-best on the team.
In two of the first four games, Bryant rushed for at least 55 yards. Fifth-year man Amir Carlisle snagged 23 receptions for 309 yards in 2014, but 11 of those receptions came in the first three games. Both will remain on scholarship and continue to work toward their degrees at the university.
The Notre Dame Fighting Irish enter the 2015 season in much the same way they enter most seasons; with sky-high expectations.
That depth, however, has raised questions about how the Irish can reach the 85-scholarship limit.
Kelly also announced in the statement that junior linebacker Michael Deeb and junior tight end Mike Heuerman will miss the season after taking medical redshirts.
