Novak Djokovic beats Kei Nishikori for 4th Rogers Cup
Men’s Tennis on the ATP World Tour is back to normal after a lapse at Wimbledon when Djokovic raised yet another trophy on Sunday.
Novak Djokovic sealed his winning return to tennis a month after an early Wimbledon exit as he beat Kei Nishikori 6-3, 7-5 on Sunday at the Toronto Masters. His first triumph at this event came back in 2007 and he also prevailed in 2011 and 2012 before finishing runner-up to Andy Murray past year.
If Djokovic had lacked consistency earlier in the tournament, he believes he turned the corner against Monfils. Many will argue that at 29 years of age and in the peak of his powers – there is no better and more opportunistic timing for Djokovic to win his first gold medal at the Olympic Games. It will be not like today, with many rallies.
Djokovic found his game in flawless order as he stopped the victory run of tenth seeded Monfils.
“That’s what I had to do, realize my performance”, Djokovic said. “But to actually stay there and try to be consistent took a lot of effort from every aspect of my being to really get to know myself and to improve, you know, in every way possible”. “That’s for sure”, Monfils said. “Big match like this, you learn”. Big match like this, you learn.
He played his best when it mattered most, and after struggling at points with his serve against Monfils, he failed to register a double-fault today, and won nearly all the points from the baseline.
Djokovic, a 12-time Grand Slam champion, has won nine of 11 matches against Nishikori. A stunned Wawrinka stood at the net, putting his head down on the net before pulling his shirt over his head as he walked back to the baseline.
“I haven’t beat Novak for a long time on hard court so I think it’s going to be a great challenge for me to play Novak again in the final, because we played in Miami and he dominated the game”, said Nishikori. The doubles world no. 10 Dodig and doubles world no. 3 Melo defeat the slumping Jamie Murray and Bruno Soares in the two teams’ first meeting of the year.
The second set was more competitive, with Anderson making only 53 percent of his first serves but getting broken just once and creating two break-point chances against Wawrinka, who saved both of them.
Novak Djokovic – rusty, aggravated, injured – is far and away the best player in the world.
Djokovic won a bronze medal in Beijing and just missed the podium in London, losing to Argentina’s Juan Martin Del Potro in the bronze medal match. “So I expect that I will not have a good rhythm because she can hit a victor and you don’t see the ball, but she can miss sometimes”.
“I need more experience in these kind of matches”.
The Japanese world number six led for the first time 4-3 before Djokovoic reined him in with a break for 6-5.
Meanwhile, in the women’s division tournament, Romanian Simona Halep defeated American Madison Keys to claim the Rogers Cup title for the women’s division, Sunday also at Montreal, Canada.
