Novak Djokovic can not Repeat a Year Like 2015, Says Roger Federer
Peerless Novak Djokovic beat Roger Federer 6-3, 6-4 at the ATP World Tour Finals in London to pick up his fourth title in a row.
As predicted in the tournament preview here this time last week, Novak Djokovic and Roger Federer shall contest today’s final of the season ending finale.
“Obviously, I’m very proud, with my team, for the achievements this season”, he said.
Murray’s performances at the O2 Arena have been a mixture of the good, the bad and the ugly, and he has never won both of his opening two group matches since the event moved to London in 2009.
In 2007, he retired midway through a Wimbledon semi-final against Rafael Nadal because of an infected blister on his toe At the 2009 Australian Open, Djokovic retired from his match citing cramps, fatigue and dizziness and trailing Roddick, 6-7 (3-7), 6-4, 6-2, 2-1.
“I don’t know what the crowd support is going to be like (in Rio)”.
” Just another step for me (to) be able to play at that level against such a great player is good news, ” Nadal said.
Djokovic played the big points and the big matches better than anyone this season, hitting incredible angles from awkward defensive positions. After just an hour and 20 minutes, Djokovic had championship point and, with a whimper rather than a bang, Federer double faulted.
“Against Roger it’s very specific”, said Djokovic who finishes 5-3 against Federer in 2015.
A brilliant cross-court backhand set up the top seed to break in game three, and Federer had racked up 16 errors by the time he was broken for a second time to drop the set. Federer just about managed to raise a smile.
But the 17-time Grand Slam champion from Switzerland is considered by many to be the best indoor player in history. Margins are very small at the top.
This was the eighth meeting of the year between Djokovic and Federer, who played off for both the Wimbledon and US Open titles, both won by Djokovic. Already the Federer first serve was missing the spot and with the kind of precise returning that Djokovic can produce, the result was not in doubt. He is also now tied with Federer 22-22 in their head-to-head.
“But it does definitely feel great when I’m playing the way I played”, he said.
Federer was supposed to play Djokovic in last year’s final but pulled out with a back injury sustained while beating Wawrinka in a tempestuous three-setter.
“I don’t think there’s that much I need to change, other than a few tactical things against certain players at some times”.
The Swiss, who had been bidding for a lucky seventh title of the season and a seventh at the year-end showpiece, was unable to gain traction against Djokovic, who won his 11th trophy of a superlative 2015 as he played in his 15th consecutive final of the season.
Djokovic was better than Federer in nearly all facets of the game. And at times – many times – it seemed as if Federer was one backhand victor away from jamming his foot in the door, getting right back into the match.
He then beat Czech Tomas Berdych to secure a semi-final berth and was back at full throttle against Nadal, crunching 24 winners and dropping just three points on his first serve.
Not a break point appeared on his side, while a rash drop shot into the net and a too-slow net attack put him at 0-40.
