Novak Djokovic v Andy Murray: Australian Open final stats
The win could form the second part of a Scottish treble here after Gordon Reid won the wheelchair singles earlier on Saturday while Andy Murray takes on Novak Djokovic in the men’s singles final on Sunday.
This is Murray’s fourth encounter with Djokovic in the Australian Open finals. Obviously you play the five sets it isn’t ideal, but Novak also won here the time we played five hours and then played a six-hour final.
Murray was far from his peak here, conceding 65 unforced errors and five service games, but he was up against an opponent who forces those mistakes by the sheer relentlessness of his hitting. Nestor’s last title came with Edouard Roger-Vasselin of France previous year in Cincinnati.
The 24-year-old from Alexandria, West Dunbartonshire, edged out Belgium’s Joachim Gerard as he played the first grand slam singles final of his tennis career.
With history stacked against him, Murray knows that he will have to be at his best if he is to take his chance to win his first Australian Open this Sunday.
In his victory speech, an emotional Jamie said: “Andy you should be in bed”.
Scotland’s First Minister Nicola Sturgeon was one of the first to offer congratulations on Twitter.
Angelique Kerber has gone where at least one courageous soul before her has – for a quick swim in the murky Yarra River after winning the Australian Open. “I don’t know why you’re here taking photos but we’ll be there supporting you”, a tearful Murray said in a courtside interview.
“(I’ve) been in the situation before where (I) haven’t won specific tournaments, like Roland Garros, for example, against players like (Rafael) Nadal who were dominating there”, Djokovic said.
World number two Murray will have to contend with the pressure not only of trying to win the tournament after being runner-up four times, but an anxious wait to see if his wife Kim goes into labour. “I hope you will experience a feeling like no other because that’s what happened to me”. It’s Djokovic’s favourite – but there are plenty of rivals for the Serb.
Djokovic will play Andy Murray in the men’s singles final on Sunday. This will be Murray’s ninth major final, but he only has those two trophies to show for it.
Murray and his Brazilian partner kept their composure and made the crucial break in the fifth game of the second set, with the remainder going the way of serve to force the match to a decider.
Murray pulled two Championship points back but not a third as Djokovic served out with an ace to seal the title, and when they met at the net Murray had two words for his conqueror: “too good”.
