Novak Djokovic wins ATP title at The O2
Roger Federer is already planning his 2016 assault on the Australian Open, only hours after losing 6-3 6-4 to Novak Djokovic in the final of the World Tour Finals on Sunday.
It was not as routine as the score suggests but Djokovic finished the stronger.
Djokovic also made amends for defeat by six-time champion Federer in the group stage on Tuesday. It was Djokovic’s 11th title of the season, including three Grand Slam trophies.
” Won 27 of his 28 matches in 2015″. I’d rank Nadal’s 2010 and Mats Wilander’s 1988 three-slam years season slightly below the aforementioned only because they didn’t dominate the sub-Slam events like the others did. “Of course, it does flatter me, inspire me”.
Nadal, on if the slow surface in London helps him: “I don’t play very well in that slow surfaces”. That I don’t care about it? The moments where I should have gone safe, I didn’t, and vice versa.
“This is a sport I love truly with all my heart. I used to work more precisely towards him”, said the world No.3.
While the most important World Tour Finals drama played out on center court at the O2, the press room offered a little bit of everything this week.
Novak Djokovic insists he can still deliver better, but played down suggestions he was focused on chasing the grand slam tallies of rivals Roger Federer and Rafael Nadal.
Given his dominance for the past 12 months, it seems like a rhetorical question. “It inspires me even more to keep on going and hopefully playing on this level in the future”, he said. “I’d like to give myself credit for that”.
“I’m obviously very proud, together with my team, for the achievements of the season”, Djokovic told Annabel Croft afterward.
Federer, on taking the bench that had Djokovic’s towel on it: “Okay, a towel doesn’t mean much to me, to be quite honest”. I don’t have a sense of urgency. I’m just trying to enjoy every moment on the court. The fact it hasn’t been done again in 46 years shows how hard it is.
“If I played the match again, that is what I would try to do different”. Nadal finishes 61-20 with three titles in 2015. I was returning better, making him play more shots. I had a few hair in my eye, and I just wanted to get rid of it. That literally took two seconds. Tried my best this week.
What to make of Murray’s week in London? I think this tournament, as well.
Thirty-seven of their past 38 matches have been either semis (21) or finals (16) – the lone exception is their opening Group B clash on Day 2 of the 2013 World Tour Finals.
As for Murray, attention now turns to the Davis Cup Final in Belgium at the weekend. He was barred from participating in the French Open that year because of his commitment to play World Team Tennis resulting in one of the biggest “ifs” in tennis history – would Connors have won the calendar year Slam that year had he been allowed to play at Roland Garros (Bjorn Borg went on to win his first of six French titles that year)?
Going forward, where are the challengers coming from?
These two played each other earlier in the week in the round robin stage. And had 31 Wins v Top 10 players. After a miserable 2015 campaign, Nadal had looked somewhere close to his best over the last week.
Second seeds Tecau-Rojer needed just 60 minutes to defeat eighth-seeded Bopanna-Mergea 6-4, 6-3 to clinch the title in what can be called a one-sided encounter.
The 2011 season was the first time we saw the beast in full flow. Clearly he’s going into next year with massive confidence. “Tecau and Rojer got us”.
