Novak Djokovic wins ATP World Tour Finals
He failed to make the final of one tournament of the sixteen he entered.
In finishing 2015 off as the World No. 1, Djokovic will add a handful of weeks to his total during tennis’ very short off-season.
Novak Djokovic has capped off a brilliant year by taking out the ATP World Tour Finals in London on Monday morning (AEDT) with a straight-sets victory over Roger Federer. But in terms of the highlights of the year, I would say those were the Wimbledon and US Open finals that I played against Roger. But that is only the beginning.
It, however, remains to be seen if Djokovic subsists with his godly form next season or will Federer’s experience be accentuated.
In 2015, he won six titles and was runner up five times, and not so surprisingly, all the five finals losses came against Djokovic.
As ever, winning another Wimbledon title is high on his list of priorities and he will also target a gold medal at the Rio Olympics. “Then because of the three days off I had after Paris, I think I’m really fresh”.
As he moves further and further ahead of the chasing pack, Djokovic is chasing records and history. Rafael Nadal would be forced to agree. Now the legacies of both great champions are under threat as the current world No 1 creates his own era and his own legend.
“Obviously I’m very proud, together with my team, for the achievements of the season”. “This could not have been a better finish”.
Asked about his ambitions for next season, the world No 1 said: “It has been the best season of my life”. I’m just trying to cherish every moment at this level. “When you are growing up, you are dreaming to play tennis in tournaments like this and to fight for the biggest trophies in sport”.
Murray could have been forgiven for turning his thoughts to the final in Ghent when he dropped the opening set and was broken twice in the second set. The Serb has never led their head-to-head but now that he is level pegging, it only a matter of time before he leaves Federer in his wake there, too.
However, Federer believes that although it would be hard for the Serb to have a bad season, he just can not repeat the heroics next time around.
The former world number one is eyeing some relentless training and playing in Asia’s International Premier Tennis League showcase next month, in order to hit the ground running at the Australian Open in January. At least this time he put up a decent show even if the result was inevitable.
“It would have been nice to serve a little bit better early on in the match, play better overall on his second serve, because he does allow you to play on his second serve”, he said. This week was great again, fantastic year all round.
“Roland Garros is always one of the biggest challenges I have every year, but it’s not the only one”. Some points were insane. “But Novak deserved to win”.
Djokovic is aware that he has had a brush with perfection this year, and it has left him somewhat humbled – and hungry to continue his pursuit of the state.
The question for everyone as they head into the off-season is: how to beat the unbeatable?
The Serbian made his breakthrough in the third game of the final and Federer just could not find the consistency he needed to counter his opponent’s relentless excellence.
