Now, More Than Ever, A Day for Women Matters
Purple is designated as the official colour of International Women’s Day as it symbolizes justice and dignity which relates to women’s equality.
A spokesperson said, “This year’s UN International Women’s Day theme is #beboldforchange”.
Some of the NY organizers, however, stress the event’s worldwide roots. SDG 5 calls for gender equality, both to advance women’s human rights, and also as a driver of development and poverty reduction. Women from at least 50 countries are taking part in the protest.
The letter, published on the Women’s March on Washington website, provides the starting point for engaging in an important dialogue about women’s rights, the gender wage gap, and gender-based discrimination with your employer. It is with respect and admiration we honour those women who fought for the right to vote; the freedom to use birth control; for women to be represented in parliament and acknowledged as decision makers. But gender violence is not the only issue energizing the strike.
Women wanting to join the cause are invited to take the day off from paid and unpaid labor.
